When can you kayak the Na Pali Coast?

In summer. Hawaii DLNR's season for paddling and landing on this coast runs May 15 to September 7. Our Ha'ena day trip runs April 15 to October 15 and our Polihale trip runs May 15 to September 15, with the shoulder weeks always dependent on conditions.

What is the best month to kayak Na Pali?

June through August. Trade winds are established, the swell is at its smallest, the water is warmest and the days are longest. July is the most reliable and also the busiest.

Can I kayak the Na Pali Coast in winter?

No. The state's season does not cover it and the ocean does not allow it — winter surf on this shore regularly runs 20 feet and more. If you are visiting between November and April, see the coast from a west-side boat tour or from a helicopter.

What happens if the weather is bad on my trip day?

We reschedule. Conditions decide, not the calendar, and we would rather move your trip than run it in the wrong ocean.

The Best Time to Kayak the Na Pali Coast, Month by Month

Summer, and only summer. Hawaii permits paddling the Na Pali Coast between May 15 and September 7, and our own season runs mid-April to mid-October. June through August is the sweet spot. Book three to four months out if your dates are fixed.

Why there is no winter season

Kauai's north and west shores face the North Pacific, and from autumn the swell arrives without much warning and does not stop. September is the first month we start seeing the winter swells. After that the surf on this coast gets consistent and very large — in our experience regularly 20 feet and more.

That is not a permitting technicality. Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources permits paddling this coast May 15 through September 7 — the window that governs landing and camping inside the wilderness park — and states plainly that unpredictable sea conditions make it potentially unsafe for the rest of the year. Our own trips run a little wider at the shoulders, in April and October, when conditions allow and when the trip does not depend on a park landing. Nobody paddles this coast in January.

Ocean conditions are a pattern, not a promise. Any trip can be moved for weather, in any month.

What summer is actually like out there

Northeast trade winds are the norm, and they are the reason the classic route runs east to west. You launch at Ha'ena and the wind pushes you toward Polihale rather than fighting you the whole way.
Water in the high 70s. No wetsuit, no thermal layers, nothing to think about.
Long days. Early starts are comfortable and there is light to spare at the far end.
Sun is the weather that matters. Not rain, not cold — six hours of reflected tropical sun. Long sleeves.
